Space Traveler Discloses Emotional Distress In the Wake of Deluge of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after enduring a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – celebrated as a researcher and activist – was part of the short-duration mission in the spring, which also included well-known figures.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the negative reaction buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a public message, referring to a phone call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she revealed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to women's health research and performed experiments during the mission, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is most acclaimed for her tireless campaigning protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after fulfilling her dream, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose support pulled her through. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the mission, including spotlight on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in April, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that crossed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also featured accomplished professionals from different industries.
