Over 20 Olympic champions, trainers and further global sports figures have signed a statement demanding a halt to the execution of a champion boxer and trainer, who is sentenced to die in Iran.

Increasing Worldwide Condemnation

Amid increasing international outrage over the country's escalating use of executions as a instrument of suppression, the strongly worded statement condemns the Iranian regime's ruling to confirm the capital punishment of the athlete.

The athlete, thirty, from the city in the northeastern region, was taken into custody for being involved in national uprisings in the year 2019 and charged of aiding an opposition group. He has passed five years in detention, where he has been abused and confined in isolation.

“Competition is designed to promote hope, unity, and bravery,” the supporters stated. “The capital punishment of a champion for his beliefs is a clear violation on these principles and a warning to any competitor who attempts to express dissent.

History of Putting to Death Sports Figures

The appeal pointed out that the boxer's circumstances was not unique and emphasized the nation's past of sentencing to death sports champions for their convictions, such as a national team leader, captain of the national football team, and a women's sports leader, skipper of the women's volleyball squad. In the year 2020, a wrestling champion, a 27-year Iranian competitor, was put to death.

Additional supporters to the statement include Tracy Edwards, who captained the pioneering all-female crew in a round-the-world competition and was the first woman to be awarded a prestigious sailing award; the former captain of the national squad Craig Foster; and a sports figure, who was in the country's selection for the international competition.

Detention and Unfair Trial

The boxer was taken into custody in the spring of 2020. The charges against him included “promoting decay on Earth through incendiarism and ruin of public property”. His ruling has been reversed multiple times but on October 4 it was maintained on the third occasion. His trial was condemned as “highly unjust” by rights defenders and bodies.

Call to United Nations

The appeal to halt Vafaei Sani’s capital punishment is subsequent to a 2023 appeal to the global human rights chief for freedoms, backed by more than one hundred rights specialists and entities, calling for action to stop the competitor's capital punishment.

Death Penalty Surge
