Around 50 vehicles have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Automobiles, building surfaces and postal boxes were vandalized, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Police say they were contacted late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The liquid had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they added.
Police then located numerous other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are prohibited in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report preliminary tests suggest the fluid was probably human bodily fluid.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not cognizant of any harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
City officials announced they were trying "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the public for information.
A senior representative commented the vandalism rendered him without words and had to be resolved promptly.
"This event affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he stated on a platform, referring to the murder of nine victims by a gunman targeting people of foreign heritage in five years prior.
